ACLU Challenges Nebraska's Unfair Ballot Laws in Court

Two aspects of Nebraska's ballot petition laws are the subject of a lawsuit filed today: first, we charge the law has made it too hard for independent party candidates to be put on the ballot and second, petition circulators are currently required to be Nebraska residents in violation of the right to travel.  Our lawsuit is pending in federal court.  See a copy of the lawsuit here (December 16, 2009)

Show You're A Card-Carrying ACLU Member on Your Shirt

We have two t-shirts available: white or charcoal grey.  Both have blue printing with our logo on the front and the message on back "Equality Before the Law: Nebraska's State Motto, ACLU Nebraska's Job."  Shirts are $15 each, plus $2 shipping.  Sizes: S, M, L, XL, 2X, or 3X.  Contact us by email info@aclunebraska.org or phone (402) 476-8091 to place an order.  (December 1, 2009)

North Platte Housing Authority Drug Testing Policy Violates Employees' Privacy Rights

ACLU warned the North Platte Housing Authority Board today that their drug testing policy was illegal and unenforceable.  Read the letter here.  "Requiring government employees to produce a urine sample in the presence of a stranger is the most extreme example of invasion of privacy," said ACLU Nebraska Legal Director Amy Miller.  The Board has been told to abandon the drug testing policy or possibly face a civil rights lawsuit.  (July 20, 2009)

Student Privacy Rights Letter Sent to Every Nebraska School

Following parents' complaints that Nebraska schools were giving their children's private information to military recruiters, ACLU Nebraska sent this letter to every school in the state.  Read the letter so you know your own privacy rights as a student or parent.  ACLU encourages you to contact us if you've had a similar problem with unwanted military recruiter calls. (July 17, 2009)

Omaha Night Owl Laws are Unenforceable

In a letter to city officials, ACLU Nebraska warned Omaha that their new anti-late-night-loitering ordinances are unconstitutional and unenforceable.  ACLU also expressed concerns the laws will only be used to target minority neighborhoods.  Read the press release here and the letter to Mayor Fahey here (March 26, 2009)
