The ACLU of Nebraska is seeking an experienced legal and policy counsel committed to living our diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging values to expand capacity in our legal program to develop impact litigation and advocacy campaigns to protect and expand voting rights and assist with other critical legal and policy issues. The legal and policy counsel coordinates with our communications, policy, development, and administrative teams in addition to national ACLU colleagues and other local and national partners to advance our litigation and integrated advocacy goals. The Legal and Policy Counsel will report directly to the Legal Director. The position is based in Lincoln and requires periodic in state and out of state travel.
- Conduct legal and policy research and analysis
- Draft legal memoranda, pleadings, affidavits, motions, and briefs
- Conduct legislative and administrative advocacy before government bodies
- Assist with intake, correspondence, and administrative matters
- Interview witnesses and potential clients
- Participate in discovery and motion and trial practice
- Provide support and assistance to ACLU clients, legal staff, and cooperating attorneys
- Engage in public speaking and attend community meetings to provide know your rights trainings
- Supervise student interns/law clerks
- Occasionally serve as a spokesperson for ACLU of Nebraska
- J.D. from an accredited law school
- Admission to the Nebraska Bar or eligibility for admission. ACLU of Nebraska will pay for processing reciprocity admissions, professional dues and fees, professional development, CLE, and training opportunities
- Demonstrated commitment to civil liberties and civil rights
- Excellent research, writing, and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to conduct complex legal analysis and fact-finding
- Excellent interpersonal skills and a proven ability to work independently and within a team
- Self-motivated with the ability to take initiative, manage a variety of tasks and see projects through to completion and meet deadlines

Compensation and Benefits
This is a full time exempt role. The salary range for this position ranges from $70,000- $85,000 depending on experience and skills. Excellent benefits include vacation, sick leave, and parental leave, generous health, dental, and vision insurance with employee and family premiums paid 100% by the employer, a 401k match, cell phone reimbursement, and paid parking.
