The following is a statement by ACLU of Nebraska Legal & Policy Counsel Rose Godinez in response to Governor Ricketts' deployment of National Guard troops to the southern U.S. border:

"We are disappointed in Governor Ricketts' decision to deploy the honorable men and women of the Nebraska National Guard to perpetuate a political war on immigrants, refugees and asylees. The individuals and families--including young children--seeking refuge in the United States from dangerous persecution in their home countries have the right to request asylum in the United States without interference.

We urge Governor Ricketts to reconsider his misguided decision to expend Nebraska taxpayer resources in this manner and urge him to put aside this divisive approach and join with Nebraska faith leaders, business leaders and elected officials from across the political spectrum who are advocating for thoughtful solutions like comprehensive immigration reform that would benefit our communities and economy, while protecting human rights."
