Democracy thrives when elections are truly free, fair, and accessible to all. Every eligible Nebraskan — regardless of race, income, or circumstance — must have an equal opportunity to cast their vote and have it counted. Election laws should be safeguards of participation, protecting and promoting direct democracy and the fundamental right to vote. This is one of our priority issue areas in our 2025-2028 Strategic Plan.
In 2024, Nebraska saw the second-highest number of votes cast in our state’s history. Nearly 74% of registered voters cast a ballot.

State senators, bowing to pressure from outside the state, aim to end Nebraska’s split electoral vote system, shifting to winner-take-all to weaken the voting power of some Nebraskans. At the same time, some of these elected officials express support for increased restrictions on access to the ballot, regulations that will make it harder for Nebraskans — especially rural voters, seniors, students, and low-income communities — to register and vote, leading to lower turnout and less representative results. These attacks undermine democracy and further silence communities that historically have had to fight for basic rights of representation.
