Turn your summer gathering into a community fundraiser powering change.

As we approach the 250th anniversary of our nation's founding, many are reflecting on what freedom, democracy and civil liberties mean to us today. Across Nebraska, people will be gathering with friends, family and neighbors this July 4th. This year, we invite you to turn those moments into something more: a space for conversation, connection and action in support of the rights and freedoms we all share.

"Whether it’s a backyard BBQ, a block party, a small dinner or community gathering, your event can help transform conversation into meaningful impact – raising critical support and strengthening the community that makes this work possible. By bringing people together, you’re helping build a stronger, more engaged community committed to protecting civil liberties in Nebraska. That matters now more than ever."

— Adairah Thapa, Development Director

Planning Your Gathering

Hosting doesn't have to be complicated. You’re already gathering! This is simply an opportunity to add intention to the moment.

Choose Your Gathering Style

  • Backyard BBQ or Potluck – invite friends, colleagues, family, etc., over and share why this work matters to you.
  • Small Dinner or House Party – create space for deeper conversation around rights, freedoms and what they mean to you today; especially in this moment.
  • Neighborhood or Block Gathering – bring people together in your community and introduce others to our work.
  • Casual Hangout with a Purpose – even a few friends gathered together can make an impact!

Set the Tone

You don't need to be an expert. Your voice is what matters most.

  • Share why you care about human rights, civil rights and civil liberties.
  • Invite conversation. This does not have to be formal.
  • Create a welcoming, inclusive space for people to meaningfully engage.

Make it Meaningful

You can keep it simple while still making an impact.

  • Set a fundraising goal (big or small!).
  • Encourage guests to make a gift during or after the event.
  • Share a short story or example of why this work matters.

Helpful Tips

  • Pick a time and place that works for you! Either your home, a park, shared space, etc.
  • Keep it accessible and welcoming to all.
  • Send invites out in advance (text, email, or social media).
  • Don't overthink it. Authenticity goes a long way – these are YOUR people!
  • Take advantage of our printable conversation guide if you want to add some structure to your event.

Turn Your Gathering Into Impact

Make Your Gift

Invite your guests to support our work by encouraging folks to give online (point them to aclunebraska.org/give) or by writing a check to the ACLU of Nebraska at 134 S 13th St., Ste 1010, Lincoln, NE 68508. Other opportunities to give are available upon request.

Every contribution helps us:

  • Respond quickly to urgent legal challenges.
  • Advocate for policies that protect our rights and freedoms.
  • Educate and empower communities across Nebraska.

What to Say

You don't need a speech – just speak from your experience. Remember these are people you know, who are in your circle. Here’s a simple way to invite support:

“I care about this work because [your reason]. I invited you all here because I believe in protecting the rights and freedoms we all share. If you’re able, I’d love for you to support the ACLU of Nebraska today.”

Keep the Momentum Going

Your gathering can be a starting point for deeper engagement:

  • Share our work with your network.
  • Invite others to stay connected.
  • Continue conversations about rights and freedoms in your community.

Post Your Event

Share your story and photos via social media and email. Tag @acluofne so we can thank you! Send a follow up email/text thanking your attendees and recapping the highlights of the event. If there are action items, include those as well.
