Sam Petto, ACLU of Nebraska Communications Director

March 18, 2022

LINCOLN, Neb. – Today, the ACLU of Nebraska Board of Directors named Maria Funk interim executive director.

Funk, who was previously deputy director, has led the ACLU of Nebraska’s compliance, financial and human resources work since 2014. Over that time, she has grown the organization’s infrastructure to support significant growth in staff and activity, including the team’s transition from a staff of four in 2014 to a team of 10 full time staff with two contract attorneys today.

Today’s board vote follows the resignation of executive director Danielle Conrad. The board will launch a search for its next executive director in the coming months.

ACLU of Nebraska Board President Ashlei Spivey said Funk is the right leader to maintain the team’s momentum during the search.

“Maria has earned the respect and trust of the staff and board time and again,” Spivey said. “Her deliberative, consensus-building leadership style will continue to be an asset to all of us as she takes on these new responsibilities. Nebraska needs the ACLU of Nebraska at its strongest, and I am confident that with Maria in this position, the team will continue making strides advancing and protecting Nebraskans’ civil liberties and civil rights while we embark on the search for our next leader."
