Open Government

The ACLU protects Nebraskans' right to participate in government meetings and obtain public records. A democracy cannot function without government transparency and the ability of the people to hold elected officials and other government actors accountable.

While the ACLU's work has allowed Nebraska to have one of the broadest public records law in the nation, ongoing vigilance is required to ensure state and local governments comply with the law. The ACLU monitors the actions of village boards, city councils and state agencies to ensure Nebraskans have the ability to participate in governmental decision-making.

When government agencies deny access to records or conduct business in shadows instead of in the public view, the ACLU stands ready to litigate.

Open government is a cornerstone of democracy that enables advocates, activists and the press to monitor government performance and expose corruption. Without transparency in government activities, the American people are vulnerable to deception and abuse by our leaders.
