2016 - An incredible year for civil liberties!

At the Unicameral, the ACLU of Nebraska has put together our strongest advocacy team to date to implement our diverse and wide ranging civil rights agenda. Our client is the Constitution and our work impacts our most cherished rights, fundamental freedoms, and the civil liberties of all Nebraskans. We are effective due to our hard work, policy and legal expertise, and the strong voices and unyielding activism of thousands of supporters.

I was fired for speaking out for my mom

I had a childhood like many others. I had a loving mom and dad, an older brother who teased me and a couple of dogs running around the yard. We would read chapter books aloud which likely fostered my love of literature. Some of the happiest memories of my childhood take place on a New Jersey beach, surrounded by aunts, uncles and cousins with the various fried treats sold along the boardwalk and the waves crashing on the sand.

Keeping a Family from Being Separated by HIV

GayLynn Brummett and her husband, Jay, wanted to be parents. They got married in 1989 and one year later learned that GayLynn was living with HIV. They decided that the best way to grow their family was to become foster parents. They had their first child placed with them in 1991 and in 1992, a young boy was placed with them. After the boy's parents relinquished parental rights, the Brummett's decided they wanted to give this young boy a forever home.

Nearly Two Decades Later, a Loving Home for Nebraska Children

January 28, 1995 the then Department of Children and Family Services issued a memo banning "homosexuals" from being foster parents. At the time, the ACLU stated:

Giving Every Child An Opportunity to Play

Like the mom of a transgender daughter in Illinois, the moms who call our office to talk about their transgender children just want their kids to have an opportunity to do well in school.

Transgender Voices

In Nebraska, we're taught to treat everyone like our neighbors. That should include transgender residents of the Cornhusker state. Take a moment to meet transgender people who call Nebraska home.
