The first time I read Souls of Black Folk: Essays and Sketches by W.E.B Du Bios I remember thinking, why is this author, a giant in American literature, spending so much time on making an argument for the humanity, civil rights and respect of Black people? Should this not be a concept that is easily accepted and understood?
This Pride, we are encouraging the community to reflect — reflect with joy on our authentic selves, reflect on hard-earned change, and reflect a spirit of community that welcomes everyone. To explore that last idea, we sat down with Abbi Swatsworth, the executive director of OutNebraska, to talk about what community means to her and how we can all work to create strong LGBTQ communities in Nebraska.
Despite the numerous changes to Pride, one thing has been consistent throughout every iteration: community helping community.

Nebraska is receiving a lot of federal funds from the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. More than $1 billion will be distributed at the Legislature’s choosing. The funding comes with stipulations. The U.S. Department of Treasury says the money can be used for addressing the pandemic’s negative economic impacts. One specific option it lists is premium pay (read: bonuses) for essential workers.
